Discover the home, family history and polar legacy of one of the world’s greatest explorers
Visit the birthplace of Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach the South Pole and one of Norway’s greatest explorers. Set in peaceful surroundings just outside Fredrikstad, the beautifully preserved family home offers a fascinating insight into the life and upbringing of the man who changed the history of polar exploration.
During the guided tour, you’ll hear the remarkable story of the Amundsen family and discover how international trade, shipping and curiosity about the world shaped young Roald’s ambitions. Through the engaging presentation “When the World Came to Vesten”, you’ll learn how a local shipping family became connected to the wider world and inspired one of history’s greatest adventurers.
The experience also includes Framheim, a full-scale replica of the expedition hut used during Roald Amundsen’s successful South Pole expedition in 1911. Step inside the recreated polar base and hear the dramatic story of the race to the South Pole while sitting around the same style of table where Amundsen and his expedition planned their historic journey. The replica was built from the original construction drawings and recreates the atmosphere of the famous Antarctic winter camp.
Stroll through the park surrounding the historic Skipper House and continue along the scenic riverside trail to Amundsen Pier, where the Amundsen family’s shipping company once operated. The pier is also accessible by private charter boat, offering a unique opportunity to arrive just as merchants, sailors and explorers once did along the Glomma River.
This unique attraction combines polar history, maritime heritage and authentic family stories, offering an inspiring journey into the life of one of the world’s greatest explorers.
